Benthamidia Spach. Big-bracted Dogwood.
A genus of about 7-17 species, trees, of Asia, e. North America, w. North America, and montane Mexico. See Cornaceae for discussion of generic treatment. We here circumscribe Benthamidia broadly to include the syncarpous, big-bracted dogwoods of e. Asia, sometimes separated as genus Dendrobenthamia Hutchinson. The larger number of species (17) was suggested by analyses of Du, Cheng, & Xiang (2023), though they declined to recognize these, seemingly pointing to a brave, new, rank-free PhyloCode world.
